Manager guide
The Grounded Manager
Scripts and Strategy for Managers Navigating Challenging Team Dynamics
Volume 1: When Team Behavior Crosses the Line
The grounded manager does not react from anxiety or respond from anger. They lead from clarity: about what they are seeing, what it requires, and who they are in the room.
Why This Guide Exists
This guide is for managers experiencing systematic challenging, undermining, or targeting behavior from someone on their team. It follows a mentor-first, grounded-leadership framework: use your position and professional wisdom to redirect the behavior before escalating to formal process.
Management training rarely prepares people for the hardest human dynamics. Most training covers performance review, goal-setting, and team meetings. Very little covers what to do when a team member's behavior is undermining you, the team, or the professional environment you are responsible for creating.
This guide fills that gap. It is not about labeling people or assigning blame. It is about giving managers the language, the framework, and the professional grounding to address difficult dynamics with clarity, proportionality, and real investment in everyone's success.
The mentor-first philosophy underpins everything here. Before escalating to formal process, a grounded manager uses their professional experience and positional wisdom to redirect behavior, name what is happening, and give the person a fair opportunity to course-correct. Not out of weakness, but out of professional confidence.
The grounded manager is not a pushover and not a punisher. They are the stable presence that names what is happening and holds the standard, with warmth where possible and authority where necessary.
